9 most arrogant James Cameron moments

After its Golden Globes' triumph, James Cameron's "Avatar" is the clear favorite to clean up at the Oscars next month. But Hollywood insiders are already dreading the director's inevitable acceptance speech: Cameron's reputation for saying whatever he wants is legendary, especially when it comes to his own genius or his bodily needs. Here, nine of his most outspoken declarations:

1. On his willingness to interact with an "Avatar" fan:

"I don't owe you a f*cking signature. Just get out of my f*cking personal space."

—Caught on tape as Cameron was leaving the LAX airport (2010)

2. On the relative importance of his bladder:

"I'm going try to make this as brief as I can, because frankly, I have to pee something fierce."

—While accepting the "Best Director" award at this year's Golden Globes (2010)

3. On the pointlessness of asking him to direct a movie he didn't write:

"I don't look at scripts. I just write them."

—Attributed to Cameron by IMDB (circa 1988)

4. On the humbling experience of selling three scripts within months of each other:

"I haven't paid for lunch in two weeks."

—In reference to his success with "Terminator," "Rambo," and "Aliens" (circa 1983)

5. On why men prefer fantasy heroines to their wives and girlfriends:

"A big recalibration happens when [men are] forced to deal with real women. Let's face it: real women are complicated."

—From a "Playboy" interview destined to rank very low among feminists' favorite "Playboy" interviews (2009)

6. On his vision for Neytiri, Avatar's female heroine:

"Right from the beginning, I said, she's got to have tits."

—From the same "Playboy" Q&A (2009)

7. On his love for cinema:

"I made 'Titanic' because I wanted to dive to the shipwreck, not because I particularly wanted to make the movie… I said, I'll make a Hollywood movie to pay for an expedition… 'Titanic' was about f*ck you money."

—From the same "Playboy" Q&A (2009)

8. On winning the "Best Director" Oscar for "Titanic":

"I'm the king of the world…whooooo!"

—Irrefutable proof, say some, of Cameron's "celebrity hubris" (1998)

9. On his willingness to spread the gospel of self-congratulation:

"We all have the best job in the world. Give it up! Give it up for yourselves!"

—While accepting the Best Drama Golden Globe for "Avatar" (2010)

Is "Avatar" just a thinly disguised remake of Disney's "Pocahontas"? Yes, say grassroots critics — and they've created videos to prove it

"Avatar": A blue-tinted rehash of "Pocahontas"?

(20th Century Fox")

One of the many complaints about James Cameron's blockbuster film, "Avatar," is that its "derivative" plot ploddingly parallels that of 1995's Disney animated tale "Pocahontas." Though the similarities haven't dimmed "Avatar"'s box office — on track to beat Cameron's "Titanic," says BBC.com — they’ve provoked grassroots critics to "mash up" footage and audio from the two films to expose what they consider a shameless ripoff. Consider exhibits 1 through 4:

1. "Avatar" meets Disney: This spoof marries audio from 1995's "Pocahontas" with "Avatar" clips to make the case that the respective heros and heroines are interchangeable. By the time Vanessa Williams starts singing about blue moons and the irrelevancy of skin color (in "Colors of the Wind," the "Pocahontas" theme song) at 00:45, the two films seem to blur into one.

2. "Pocahontas" meets James Cameron: This mashup uses the reverses strategy — ambitiously syncing the "Avatar" trailer's audio with "Pocahontas" footage. Savvy viewers may notice that, at 1:28, Pocahontas begins "spouting" Sigourney Weaver's cynical "Avatar" dialogue, giving the effect that the sensitive Indian Maiden considers her lover an empty-headed himbo.

3. The alternative "Colors of the Wind" music video: Here, Vanessa William's Disney theme song becomes a musical backdrop to an "Avatar" dream date. Two large-nosed blue beings flirt, swoon, and soar about on the backs of pterodactyl-like creatures until it becomes clear that, of all the windy colors with which one can paint, blue is the most romantic.

4. "Pocahontas" recut as an "Avatar" action film: Similar to number 2 (above) but with a faster-paced, "Terminator" edge. In this version, the relatively chipper Disney tale turns menacing with help from James Horner's pounding "Avatar" soundtrack and Sigourney Weaver's voice ("let your mind go blank...") emerges not from Pocahontas, but from a sinister, anthromophized tree.

Street Fighter Was Officially The Worst Movie Of 2009

There were plenty of terrible movies in 2009, but only one can be the terriblest. And, according to popular movie review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes, that honour goes to Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

Yes, the Capcom/Kristin Kreuk disaster beat out other hopefuls like Old Dogs and Dragonball to claim the prize as the "moldiest" (ie worst) movie of 2009, awarded on the basis it had the worst aggregate review score of the year.

"The combination of a shallow plot and miscast performers renders Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li a perfectly forgettable video game adaptation", the site's tag reads, which is the nicest way of saying "it was a piece of shit" we've ever seen! Indeed, the film's only salvation was that it was such a piece of shit that until we were reminded of its presence with this award, we'd forgotten all about it.

For the record, and so we can get out of here on a positive note, the best movies of 2009 according to the site's reviews were Up and Star Trek.

The Top Seven Classic Movie Moments You Didn't Know Were Improv

Scriptwriting isn't easy. Some people spend months trying to perfect a specific scene, trying to write that perfect line that sticks in the mind of those who hear it. Then these guys come along and do it off the top of their heads.

7. The Silence of the Lambs

How it played out:

Anthony Hopkins' performance as the insane doctor Hannibal Lecter is by far his most notorious. He got an Oscar for the part in spite of only having 24 minutes of screen time -- just because he's that creepy. The above clip shows probably his most famous line from the film. While this line was in fact in the script, his hissing after was not, and surprised everyone on set particularly Jodie Foster. That disturbed look on her face there? That wasn't acting - she was genuinely creeped out.

6. Taxi Driver

The Moment:

Taxi Driver

How it played out:

Every great movie has one line or moment that will forever be associated with that film. In Taxi Driver, that line is "You talkin' to me?" It actually became referenced in pop culture so often it was declared by the American Film Institute to be the tenth greatest movie quote of all time. It wasn't even in the script. De Niro was just supposed to spend a moment looking menacingly at his reflection in the mirror. Instead he spent a full minute threatening it out loud.

5. The Shining

The Moment:

The Shining

How it played out:

Like the above Taxi Driver quote, this line will always be linked to its movie in the cultural unconscious. Like the above quote, it's on the AFI's best quotes list. And like the above quote, it was totally improvised. All Jack Nicholson was supposed to do was break the door down, but he figured that wasn't quite pants-crappingly insane enough, so he screamed the then-famous intro to The Tonight Show. It didn't even make sense in context, since his character's name was Jack Torrance. But holy hell was it effective.

4. Casablanca

The Moment:

Casablanca

How it Played Out:

There are two lines that will always be remembered from Casablanca. Neither are in the script. The first is the line "Play it again, Sam." This is a misquotation, but that didn't stop it from being used to reference the movie in everything from Broadway musicals to James Bond's Moonraker. The second, "Here's lookin' at you, kid" was actually an inside joke between Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman from something he said when he was teaching her how to play poker.

America's new crop of pop favorites has just hit the scene and the stylists at American Idol have primped, cut, and fashioned out average teens and twenty-somethings into hip, stylish, and moderately glamorous pop stars.

As Pink recalls in her song, "L.A. told me, you'll be a popstar. All you have to change is, everything you are." America votes for the Idol they like most, not necessarily the Idol that sings the best! In our minds, for pop stars, fashion is 3/4 the battle. After all, they can always lip-synch (ask Ashlee Simpson)!

American Idol - LA Audition Rounds

Posted on Jan 27, 2010 @ 10:42AM
DNP Random Things

The American Idol audition rounds continue to chug along. Tonight, they stopped in Los Angeles with Avril Lavigne and Katy Perry joining the judges’ table. The theme of the wannabe singers this go around seemed to be parents wanting to make a better life for their kids and ministers. Yes, you read that right -- ministers. American Idol is now a spiritual and holy place!

Night Three of American Idol Audition Rounds

Day one kicked off with Avril Lavigne and it was pretty ho hum. Those that made it through included Jim Ranger, a married, father of three who’s also a pastor. He wrote his audition song -- always a gamble. Avril is skeptical that Jim can handle a family, church responsibilities and a music career but they let him through anyway. Mary Power -- a rocker chick with an eight-year-old daughter whose own idol is Simon Cowell -- emulates Pat Benetar and makes it through too.

American Idol Scoop From Judge Randy Jackson

Of the bad on day one (and the bad were truly bad) was the geeky, mullet wearing, philosophical (though he made absolutely no sense) Neil Goldstein. He claimed to be 19 (he definitely needed to add about ten to that number), sang Rock and Roll Dreams Come True by Meatloaf... and refused to accept that he was not going to the next round... until Simon asked if he wanted to be escorted out. You gotta give him credit for his moxy!

But, the real fun started on day two when Katy Perry took her place on the judges’ table. First of all, the cattiness and tension between Kara and Katy as they constantly butted heads was simply reality TV at its best. Katy actually put Kara in her place on more than one occasion!

Those that made it through to Hollywood on day two, however, were talented and had interesting stories. There was Andrew Garcia -- son of former gang members who's trying to make a better life for his wife and child. He actually blew Simon away. Tasha Layton, another minister, was a pleasant surprise for the judges. But the most heart wrenching was Chris Golightly. He had been in over 25 foster homes since he was 18 months old. He sang Stand By Me and it was good -- but didn’t really impress Katy and Simon. He barely made it through -- and wouldn’t have if Simon and Katy were the sole deciders.

The best (of that worst that is) was Jason Greene. He sang I Touch Myself and made Katy feel dirty. His writhing on the floor, naughty dancing and blatant way that he made the judges uncomfortable was a reminder of why sometimes it’s worth sitting through the audition rounds!
