60 Seconds with Nick Cannon

NickCannon

Got a minute? Mr. Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon, opens up about hosting the summer's No. 1 show, David Hasselhoff, and what it's like to be hunted by cougars.

Q: What's been your favorite part about hosting America's Got Talent?

A: The contestants. They are striving for their dreams, and this is the opportunity of a lifetime. It brings me back to a place where I think, "Man, I remember when I was there." So I get excited to go through the journey with them.

Q: How is it working with "The Hoff"?

A: David is out of his mind. But I love it. When I was a kid and wanted to know what cool was, I thought of Michael Knight [from Knight Rider].

Q: How do you get excited night after night?

A: It's live TV, so literally, anything can happen. There are 60 pages of dialogue that I not only have to remember but not flub a word of. That keeps my adrenaline pumping all the time.

Q: And you wear a different suit every time.

A: Thank you so much. Someone actually noticed.

Q: How would you describe your style?

A: I have always been a fashion connoisseur. But ever since I was a kid, I have wanted to look different from other people. While everyone was still wearing jeans and T-shirts with tennis shoes, I wanted to switch it up a little. I wanted to feel elegant—get my Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. on.

Q: Does Mariah ever dress you?

A: Mariah actually likes it better when I dress in jeans and Nikes with baseball hats. She is cool with the suits. But she's like, "I love it when you are just in a T-shirt."

Q: How was it having her perform her new single, "Obsessed," on the show?

A: It was wonderful. Back in the day—the great variety shows of the sixties and seventies—you would see husbands and wives having fun on television. I felt like we definitely had the opportunity to have one of those moments, and it was genuine.

Q: You've been called cougar bait—is the age gap in your marriage ever an issue?

A: I donĂ¿t know where the cougar age starts. But we don't really think about it. If anything, I am probably the more serious one around the house. And that says a lot, considering I am the comedian, and she is the one always cracking jokes.
